In the late 1960s, a format came into being which would briefly rule the world of portable music. This revolutionary container for magnetic tape was more portable and comparatively easier to use than conventional record albums, and soon made its way into every luxury car, truck, and van of the 1970s. Even 8-track "walkman"s once existed- though bulky and hung over the shoulder on a strap, they were considerably better than the suitcase-sized portable record players available at the time. But alas, along came the High- Fidelity cassette tape and even the (gasp!) digital compact disc. By 1982, the 8-track tape was ousted from its position at the top of the list of preferred portable recording media, and was consigned to slowly decay in the back rooms of D.I's, Salvation Army shops, basements, and closets everywhere. My own collection is no exception, as I live in the basement.
