How to fix an 8-track tape

A common problem in 8-tracks is that after approximately 22 years, the glue holding the tape loop together deteriorates, and one day as the tape gets to the end of a program, instead of automatically switching programs, the tape just comes apart and retreats into the dark, deep recesses of the cartridge. I've had experience with this many times, and have figured out how to open and splice the tape back to near-working order.

First, you must open the tape.

The tabs shown are usually what is holding it together. If not, then there is a central screw, or a combination of both. First, remove the front label, if necessary, in order to gain access to the screw or tabs. Then, either unscrew the screw or gently use a dull yet pointy butter knife to loosen the tabs. GENTLY pull the front cover off of the tape, while holding the tape firmly against a flat, horizontal surface. Once you have gained access to the insides of the tape, splice the two separated ends of the tape loop back together, making sure each side of the tape corresponds correctly so that you don't suddenly start listening to upside-down magnetic tape. Then, re-thread the tape through the correct path, using another tape or one of my crappy drawings as a reference. Then, turn the spool clockwise, and like magic, the tape should tighten up on its own.
